This weekend I was at the Met and was stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this painting by late 19th century Russian realist Ilya Repin. I immediately heard “The Daily Show” theme-song.

um, can we talk about how adorable iris apfel is? seriously, she is everyone’s favorite i-want-you-to-be-my-grandma octogenarian. born in my now-homebase of astoria, queens, iris’ mother owned a boutique, which no doubt inspired her to grow up wholeheartedly immersing herself in fashion. she studied art history at nyu and the university of wisconsin before dabbling in interior design, illustration and briefly working at wwd. she co-founded a textile firm, old world weavers, with her husband, which she ran from 1948 until retiring in 1992. apfel still acts as a consultant and lecturer.
